Mayor and Councillors bios

Jamie McGarvey

MAYOR JAMIE MCGARVEY'S INAUGURAL ADDRESS - DECEMBER 7TH, 2010

Ladies and gentlemen,

Thank you to everyone for coming out tonight.   To begin with, I have to thank the voters of Parry Sound, for the support that they have shown me in my quest to become Mayor.  You have given me a great honour that I take very seriously in carrying out my duties and representing you.   One should never forget that it is the rate payers of Parry Sound that we work for.

One of the first things that I would like to see started again is the use of the Customer Care forms that we used to have, so that inquiries can be tracked for better Customer Service.

I look forward to working with this new council and the new Team dynamics that it brings.  We have a good group that is ready to get to work, and your new council will be kept very busy.  We have already started our Strategic Planning process for the next 4 years and this material will be brought forward for Public comment in February.  For the new members of council they are being brought up to speed so that they are aware of the business at hand and apprised of their responsibilities.

In reflection over the last 2 years there was a great carrot hung before us in the form of 2/3rd’s funding for infrastructure projects.  Yes, Cascade St. will be better in many ways.   We have a great looking Town Center, a revitalized Bobby Orr Community Centre, and we will have a Canadore College Campus located here in Parry Sound.  All of these amenities make our town better and more pleasing for those that live here, and those that want to live here.

But we do have to pay our share.   So there will be great emphasis over the next while put on fiscal sustainability and work on increasing our tax base.   New government regulations on our financial department bring new challenges and benefits.   But to secure our financial security, a Financial Plan will be put into place to keep us on course.

In an effort to bring more transparency and input into The Town of Parry Sound’s overall operations, there will be some new committees that will be brought forward in the next while that will involve more community input into finance and operations.

I am confident that we will succeed and we will have more growth.  Housing and jobs are on the agenda and we will be working closely with existing and new developers and we will be working to optimize growth potential in our New Official Plan.

Parry Sound as always is a great place to live, work and play and we are open for business.

We have a great town with great neighbours.  We will build bridges with our neighbours so that our area will succeed.  When one succeeds we all succeed.  There is great opportunity for positive growth that will benefit all of the West Parry Sound Area and it will be those partnerships that will make us stronger and more attractive for new development.

In closing I would like to thank, Reverend Robert Sweet for the Blessing, Morley MacDonald our Piper, the Wasauksing First Nation Little Spirit Singers, and our Town Staff for putting everything together for tonight, Jackie, Rob and all the others who were involved, thank you.

I have to thank my wife and family for their support and for putting up with me with everything that I have to do.

Again, I have to thank the ratepayers of Parry Sound and all of you for coming out tonight.

Thank you and good evening.
