Mayor and Councillors bios

MAYOR, RICHARD ADAMS

  • Served on Council with the Town of Parry Sound from 1973 to 1982, for 5 terms.  Served on Executive of FONOM (Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities), for four years, 1979-1982, the last two years as Vice President.
  • During this period, served as Chairman on every Committee of Council.  Also served as  Chairman of the following Committees:  Belvedere Heights Home for the Aged, Industrial Park Board, Parks & Recreation and Arena Board, also Vice President of Airport Commission.
  • Worked in the industrial sector for 38 years in management and is now retired.
  • Re-elected to Council in the Town in November 1997 and re-elected to FONOM Executive and served as President for 4 years.   Total of 16 of service on the Board.
  • Elected to the AMO Board and served for 6 years, 4 years as Chair of the Northeastern Caucus.
  • Served on the Board of the Parry Sound District Municipal Association, President for 3 years.
  • Member of the founding Board of NOSM (Northern Ontario School of Medicine).
  • Received the FONOM Executive Award in 2004 for contributing to the growth & prosperity of Northern Ontario.
  • Appointed to the AMO Honour Roll 2004-2005 in appreciation for services to Ontario Municipal Governments and AMO.
  • Elected Mayor in 2006
  • AMO appointee to Provincial/Municipal Fiscal Review Committee.
  • AMO appointee on UAP Committee and Family Health Teams (Physician shortage & improving level of health care in Ontario)
  • Past member of Ontario Forestry Coalition (working to save Ontario forest industry).
  • Past Chair of Parry Sound Non-Profit Housing Board and past member of Parry Sound Library Board.
  • Currently serving on the G-8 Summit Committee as representative for West Parry Sound District along with other mayors from Muskoka.

COUNCILLOR CONRAD VAN DER VALK

  • Born in Holland, 1944 and emigrated to Canada on SS Ascania, landing at Pier 21, Halifax, 1951.
  • Canadian citizen.  Graduate of University of New Brunswick.  Resident of Parry Sound since 1969.  Retired high school history teacher.  Father of 4 grown children, a daughter and three sons.
  • Avid sailor, kayaker, bicycler and cross country skier.
  • Currently serving six term as Councillor, first elected in 1991.  Past Chair of the District Social Services Administration Board, Parry Sound Area Planning Board, member of West Parry Sound Health Centre Board and member or past member of numerous other committees of Council.

COUNCILLOR JAMIE MCGARVEY

  • Born in Parry Sound, 1958 and employed for 22 years with Parry Sound Home Hardware.
  • Served 6 years as a Councillor in Christie Township before being elected in 1991 for Parry Sound Town Council.
  • Served on various in-Town and Area Committees in the past 15 years.
  • Worked with youth, Town organizations and Town businesses to establish a skateboard/roller blade park.
  • Enjoys jogging, biking, canoeing & home repair

COUNCILLOR BONNIE KEITH

  • Goal oriented and university educated.
  • Elected in 2006.
  • Member on various Committees:  Parry Sound Transit, Parry Sound Area Planning Board, West Parry Sound POA Partners.
  • Hobbies include canoeing, playing the bagpipes, swimming, scuba diving, weightlifting, dancing, skiing, modelling and designing clothes.
