Cemeteries

Cemetery Information
The Town of Parry Sound owns and maintains two cemeteries.
Hillcrest Cemetery is located on William Street and bordered by Hillcrest Avenue and Isabella Street, with vehicle access on William Street. The Cemetery office is located in the rear of the chapel. The cemetery is generally staffed Monday to Friday 7:30 to 4:00 during Spring, Summer and Fall.
Sylvan Acres Cemetery is located on the Hurdville Road, approximately 15 minutes North East of the Town of Parry Sound. (Hwy 124, right onto Hurdville Rd, the cemetery is on the right). Generally staff are only at Sylvan Acres to perform maintenance or interments.
Questions concerning the cemeteries should be directed to Ann Hurdman at 746-2101 ext. 214 or ahurdman@townofparrysound.com
For complete rules and regulations of the cemeteries please refer to Cemetery By-Law which establishes the maintenance, management, regulation and control of the Hillcrest Cemetery and Sylvan Acres Cemetery. Please see 2012 Cemetery Fees for pricing.
The following information is general in nature:
Interments are performed between May 15th and November 15th, although as long as the frost is not too deep nor the snow too deep interments can take place after November 15th or before May 15th with the authorization of the Cemetery Lead hand.
Monuments may only be constructed and placed by a monument company. As per the by-law monuments are subject to a Monument Care & Maintenance fee which is designated to a trust fund by the Cemeteries Act. Each monument placed is subject to a Staking Fee.

Sale of Interment Rights
Hillcrest - there are no lots available for sale.
Sylvan Acres - contact Ann Hurdman for sales.
Lot Decorations
The section in the by-law concerning lot decorations is fairly extensive. Please refer to the by-law.
Note: All lot decorations must be removed by October 15th or they are considered abandoned and are discarded.
Interment Rights Ownership
As the cemeteries get older the situation arises where the original owner of the lot is deceased. In these cases the following applies to ownership of cemetery lots.
If the lot was not left specifically to one person in the original owner's last will & testament, the ownership of the lot passes to their spouse, after the passing of the spouse the ownership then passes jointly to all offspring of the original owner. If, for example, they had 6 children each of the 6 children would have to grant permission for any burial to take place within the graves in the lot.
A sample Letter of Permission to Bury is included in the by-law as Schedule "D".
