School Crossing Guard
Role
The role of the adult school crossing guard is to direct and supervise the movement of persons (as defined in the HTA) across a highway by creating necessary gaps in vehicular traffic to provide safe passage at a designated school crossing location.
This requires that the guard identify adequate gaps in traffic or, if they prove to be insufficient, to create safe gaps. In order to perform effectively a School Crossing Guard must be constantly alert to the needs and actions of the children, the volume and direction of traffic, and the diverse weather conditions which affects all aspects of a crossing situation.
Authority
Section 176 of the Highway Traffic Act, gives the authority to the crossing guard to stop approaching vehicles when displaying a STOP paddle at a designated school crossing. The use of this authority must be displayed in a confident, decisive, firm, understanding and fair manner.
