Frequently Asked Questions
Q When will the streets/sidewalks be plowed and snow banks removed?
A Plowing, salting & sanding and the removal of snow banks is based on priority. We have three designated routes for our big plow trucks and two specific designated routes for our sidewalk units.
Raod prioritization - Bowes, Seguin, Church, Joseph, the downtown core, school zones and intersections are plowed first, followed by residential and non-commercial.
Sidewalk prioritization is downtown and school zones, Monday to Friday and downtown and church zones on Sunday.
Priority for snow removal, includes handicap spots downtown, metered parking areas and the banks that are causing vehicles to encroach into the traffic lanes. Other street locations where there are either problems with visibility at intersections or where the snow that is left behind by the plow is encroaching onto the traffic lanes are next. From here we work on school zones and school areas.
Please remember that residents are responsible for piling their shoveled & plowed snow in a manner which will not impede their sight or their neighbour's sight when pulling out of their driveway. The Town does not remove snow banks that you have created.
Q As a property owner, how do I know what water & sewer services are my responsibility and what is the town's responsibility?
A The Town of Parry Sound owns all infrastructure up to your property line. All pipes from the street to your house/business are the responsibility of the property owner.
Q Why didn't my garbage and/or recycling get picked up?
A Your garbage and/or recycling may not have been picked up for several reasons.
The number one reason being that it was set out late. Please have all your waste out at the curb by 7:00 a.m.
If your garbage was picked up, but your recycling wasn't, it may be due to putting the wrong recycling bin out. Please remember that Parry Sound is on a 2 stream recycling program. This means that container bins are picked up one week, and the fibre bin is picked up the next week.
If garbage has not been picked up due to bad weather, please check this web site, tune in to 103.3 Moose FM or contact the municipal office at 746-2101, for rescheduling.
Q Why can't I take my shingles and tires to the dump?
A The Town of Parry Sound does not operate a 'dump' or 'landfill site'. The Town of Parry Sound operates a Transfer Station with rules & regulations covered under a Ministry of Environment issued Certificate of Approval (C of A). Our C of A does not allow us to accept products containing asbestos, a mineral often found in shingles.
No, we do not accept tires. When you purchase new tires, most service stations will dispose of your tires for a fee.
Q Does Parry Sound have a Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste Depot and who can use it?
A Yes, Parry Sound has a Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste Depot that is open from mid April to mid October each year.
The following municipalities may use the Depot: The Township of the Archipelago, Township of Carling, Municipality of McDougall, Township of McKellar, Township of Seguin and the Municipality of Whitestone. The attendant will ask for proof of residency before accepting your Household Hazardous Waste. You much have proof of residency.
Q I go to Florida for the winter, do I still have to pay for water & sewer when I'm not using them?
A Yes, unless you have the water service shut off at the street by one of our water operators. To arrange for your service to be shut off and turned back on, please contact administration for the Public Works Department at 746-2101 ext. 213 or 236. Please remember that someone must be present when service is turned off or on.
